To use a dictionary or not to use a dictionary?

Sep 23, 2014

In class student’s love using their phones to translate words that they don’t know, which of course is useful and important. But another skill is just as important to develop – working out the meaning of the words from the context (the text/sentence) they are in. This is how you learnt your own language when you were a child – you didn’t have a dictionary then! Being able to make a good guess about the meaning of the word is so important – you can’t always ask someone when you are listening, and what will you do if you are in an exam? You can’t use a dictionary then either! So try reading the sentence carefully, guessing what the word means and then checking it in your dictionary to see if you were right or not. Hopefully this will help your English improve very quickly!
