5 Tips to learn English Vocabulary

Apr 28, 2023

At the Islington Centre for English, we know that Learning English vocabulary can be a challenging task. However, with the right techniques, it can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Here are five effective tips to learn English vocabulary:

  1. Contextual Learning: Contextual learning involves learning new vocabulary words in the context of a sentence, a paragraph, or a conversation. This technique can help you understand how the new word is used and what it means. When learning new words, try to read them in a sentence or listen to them in a conversation, and make sure you understand the meaning of the word in that particular context.

  2. Flashcards: Flashcards are a great tool to learn new vocabulary words. You can create flashcards with the word on one side and the definition or an example sentence on the other side. You can also use images or illustrations to help you remember the meaning of the word. Review your flashcards regularly and try to use the new words in your daily conversations.

  3. Mnemonics: Mnemonics are memory aids that help you remember new vocabulary words by creating a connection between the word and a familiar image or concept. For example, you can remember the word "connoisseur" by visualizing a person with a French beret and a long mustache, holding a glass of wine, which is a common image associated with a connoisseur.

  4. Reading: Reading is an excellent way to learn new vocabulary words in context. Choose books, articles, or other reading materials that are at your level and focus on the words you don't know. You can use a dictionary or an online tool to look up the meaning of new words and make a note of them. Try to use these new words in your daily conversations to reinforce your learning.

  5. Language Exchange: Language exchange programs or language partners can be a great way to learn new vocabulary words and practice your speaking skills. Find a language partner who speaks English and is willing to help you practice. You can set up regular meetings where you can talk and learn new words from each other. This technique can also help you improve your pronunciation and fluency.

In summary, learning English vocabulary requires dedication and practice, but using techniques like contextual learning, flashcards, mnemonics, reading, and language exchange can make the process more enjoyable and effective. By incorporating these techniques into your language learning routine, you can expand your vocabulary and communicate more effectively in English.  Learn English at our English school in London!
